According to Over The Cap, the New York Jets are projected to have $99.3 million in cap space during the 2026 offseason, fourth-most in the NFL.

Jermaine Johnson already has an idea for how the Jets should use it.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Johnson reposted a fan’s post that speculated whether the Jets should bring back defensive end John Franklin-Myers, an impending free agent. Johnson attached the infamous “eyeballs” emoji, implying his support for the idea.

Franklin-Myers, 29, is in the final year of a two-year, $15 million contract he signed with the Denver Broncos ahead of the 2024 season. He will be an unrestricted free agent in 2026.

A 2018 sixth-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams, Franklin-Myers’ career took off after the Jets claimed him off waivers in August 2019. After sitting out his first season in New York due to injury, Franklin-Myers broke out in 2020, recording three sacks, 13 quarterback hits, and 51 total pressures across 15 appearances.

It was the start of a successful run with the Jets, during which Franklin-Myers helped anchor one of the best defenses in the NFL. From 2020 to 2023, Franklin-Myers played 65 games with the Jets (52 starts), recording 17.5 sacks, 61 quarterback hits, 205 total pressures, and 125 total tackles.

Franklin-Myers, who has a “tweener” frame at 6-foot-4 and 288 pounds, was known for his ability to rotate between the interior and the edge. On run downs, Franklin-Myers provided a sturdy frame on the outside, and on pass downs, Franklin-Myers would kick inside to explode past guards as a pass rusher.

In April 2024, former Jets general manager Joe Douglas traded John Franklin-Myers to the Broncos for a 2026 sixth-round pick. Franklin-Myers has continued his success as part of a thriving Denver front, recording 11.5 sacks, 58 tackles, and 25 quarterback hits across 27 games (25 starts).

Meanwhile, since dumping Franklin-Myers, the Jets’ once-proud defensive line has deteriorated to a husk of what it was between the 2022 and 2023 seasons. The Jets have the second-fewest quarterback hits in the NFL this season (33). It’s an area where Franklin-Myers could help; he has the 28th-most quarterback hits (86) among all players since 2020, including the 10th-most among players who primarily line up on the interior.

New York could also use Franklin-Myers’ edge-setting skills, as the team ranks 21st in yards per rush attempt allowed (4.5).

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has a history of favoring defensive ends with Franklin-Myers’ build and skill set. In Detroit, he utilized players like John Cominsky and Levi Onwuzurike in tweener roles. In New York, he’s counted on Micheal Clemons to play a larger role than many expected.

Time will tell if a JFM reunion transpires, but we already know that one leader in the Jets’ locker room is pulling for it.
