A 2022 seventh-round pick goes with Williamson in exchange for the Steelers’ fifth-rounder in the very same draft.
Williamson, 28, is currently playing out his comeback season after tearing an ACL in the preseason a year ago. After signing a three-year, $22.5 million deal ($16 million guaranteed) prior to the 2018 season, Williamson ends his Jets career with a thud.
Again, Joe Douglas unloads a veteran player for better draft position in the coming years. Doing the right thing by way of the future is a good thing; doing the right thing by way of veteran players who can contribute to winning teams during a lost Jets season is something NFL players and agents see and greatly respect. It’s the sort of thing that’s remembered as time marches forward.
Williamson led the Jets in tackles (9) in Sunday’s 35-9 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. He finishes his New York Jets career with 179 tackles (116 solo), three sacks, nine passes defended and two interceptions over 23 games.
