Denzel Mims makes New York Jets’ inactive list along with Jamison Crowder

In the latest twist of Denzel Mims‘ star-crossed New York Jets saga, the second-round receiver is set to be listed as inactive for Sunday’s home opener against the New England Patriots (1 p.m. ET, CBS).

The news stems from a report by Brian Costello of the New York Post.

Thus arrives the latest blow for Mims, the Jets’ second choice from the 2020 NFL draft. He partook in only three snaps against Carolina last weekend on an afternoon where the Jets were missing top targets Jamison Crowder and Keelan Cole.

Mims nonetheless took advantage of his limited opportunities, earning a 40-yard reception that set up the Jets’ final score of the afternoon.

Head coach Robert Saleh originally blamed the Jets’ lack of first-half offensive rhythm and traction for Mims’ limited snaps but embarked on a far more blunt response when addressing the situation on Monday.

“A majority of the reps went to Elijah Moore, Corey Davis, (Braxton) Berrios, I think they dominated the reps,” Saleh recalled, per the Jets PR transcript. “Part of that is kind of the sequence of the game.

“In that first half, a lot of three-and-outs, a lot of short drives and because of it, those receivers were able to play. You roll with your top three guys and if they need a break, that’s where the other guys step in.

“Mims, he’s been doing a good job getting himself a little bit better every day but, he’s got to know, when you’re not one of the main guys, you got to know all three spots and you’ve got to know it at a high level so you can step in and take advantage of all those opportunities,” he continued.

“So, if the Z, the F, or the X needs a break, you’re the first one that goes in because you know all three spots, you can execute at a high level and you can roll. But yesterday was more of a timing thing where offense really didn’t get rolling until that fourth quarter, which is where you started seeing him show up on the football field.”

Mims earned 357 yards on 23 receptions over nine games in his freshman season.

Crowder, a veteran slot receiver who was recently activated from the COVID-19 list, is also inactive for Sunday’s festivities in East Rutherford.

Other New York inactives for Sunday’s game include rushers Josh Adams and La’Mical Perine as well as defenders Jamien Sherwood, Jason Pinnock, and Jonathan Marshall.

Sherwood, a rookie linebacker, was previously listed as doubtful with an ankle injury.
