New York Jets apparently offered a trade package for Deebo Samuel

“With the 10th pick in the 2022 NFL draft, the New York Jets select Garrett Wilson.”

With those words from commissioner Roger Goodell on Thursday night, the New York Jets made it official: Deebo Samuel will not be playing for them. They opted for the young gun on a rookie deal instead of giving up assets and cap space for the more proven commodity.

Well, not so fast.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Gang Green actually offered San Francisco the No. 10 pick as part of a package in exchange for the disgruntled wide receiver, but the 49ers refused.

It is certainly a questionable call from the Niners, considering Samuel’s insistence that he will never play for them again, but what’s done is done now — only time can tell whether San Francisco made the right call.

While Samuel was not moved, it actually did turn out to be a big night for the movement of 1,000-yard receivers.

The Baltimore Ravens sent Marquise “Hollywood” Brown to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for the 23rd overall pick. Arizona also received the 100th overall pick alongside Brown.

The Tennessee Titans traded A.J. Brown to the Philadelphia Eagles for the 18th and 101st overall picks. Tennessee would later trade the 101st pick to the Jets in the deal that allowed New York to move up and select Jermaine Johnson.

For tonight’s second and third rounds, the Jets are in possession of the 38th overall pick (second round) and the 101st overall pick (third round). The second-rounder is the most premium pick acquired from Carolina in the Sam Darnold trade.

From what I have read, it was a little more complicated than “the 10th overall pick for Deebo Samuel”. The package I read about had the Jets trading the #10 overall plus their 5th round pick for Deebo and the 49’ers 2nd round pick (#61 overall). So the Jets would have effectively moved back 51 places (10 to 61) for the rights to Deebo. They ended up trading the 5th to the Giants in order to move up from #38 to 36 to pick Breece Hall (a slight overpay according to the draft chart).
