New York Jets rookie WR Garrett Wilson was asked to compare quarterbacks Joe Flacco and Zach Wilson

While the New York Jets await the final word on Zach Wilson‘s recovery timetable (Wilson is having surgery in Los Angeles today, which will reveal the severity of his injury), all eyes have been on his elder backup, Joe Flacco.

Flacco has been enjoying a successful training camp. The native of South Jersey has looked as dialed-in as you would expect a 15th-year veteran to look. Since Wilson’s injury, Flacco has taken over as the first-team quarterback in practice.

On Monday, rookie wide receiver Garrett Wilson was asked about the “difference between catching balls from Flacco as opposed to Zach Wilson.” The youngster gave an interesting answer. Make of it what you will.

“There’s definitely a difference,” Wilson said. “It’s a lot of experience right there with Flacco … He takes some pace off, can put pace on the ball. He kind of does a good job of making the passes receiver-friendly, that’s the best way I could put it into words. They’re pretty easy to catch. He’ll take something off the ball when you’re running a slant route, versus an out route, he’ll put some zip on it, because it’s gotta be. Things like that. So, I’ll say that.”

While not mentioning anything about Zach, Garrett gushed about Flacco’s ability to make things easier for his receivers. It’s a statement that some Jets fans took as a subtle indictment of Zach’s accuracy.

In his NFL preseason debut against the Eagles, Garrett caught 2 of 3 targets for 25 yards. The only incompletion was an inaccurate throw by Zach that sailed over Garrett’s head after he beat his defender on a quick out route.

I didn’t take it as accuracy, so much as touch. Zach throws everything 100mph.

I didn’t take it as accuracy either, I took it as speed. If that’s the only issue I’ll take it. Elway had no touch, and nobody threw harder than Favre so if that’s Zach’s “issue” count me in for that!

Good article, hope he can get it done because he is the next man up! Watched the game, maturity issues, he has to let the game develop, pushing a little. Still can’t wait! Just extend This season!
