Head coach Robert Saleh spoke about Williams winning the award, calling it “pretty cool” and that “while he may have been snubbed for the Pro Bowl, he was definitely recognized here.”
The Jets’ head coach also spoke about Williams’s journey to this point.
“Those are always the fun ones; Jacksonville drafted him, he was released two years later, I believe, and we had the opportunity to get him, and Joe (Douglas) did a great job, got the waiver wire claim in,” said Saleh.
“From there, it was just a matter of developing him, but credit to him because he flipped from a mental standpoint and understood how precious this opportunity is, and he’s attacked it. He’s got all the athleticism in the world, and he’s taken his mentality every year to a new level. I’m fully expecting him to do it again next year.”
Willaims, who signed a three-year extension this past offseason, rewarded New York with his best season yet. The linebacker has 131 tackles, two sacks, 15 tackles for loss, 10 passes defended, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, and an interception. Williams also leads all defenders with 77 stops, 14 more than the closest player.
The Murray State product has helped elevate the New York defense to the next level, shutting down opposing offenses in multiple ways. Willaims has played well enough to contend for an All-Pro selection and, more importantly, help the Jets’ defense remain elite in the coming years.
