NY Jets land the consensus No. 1 OT in Bucky Brooks’ mock draft

Tackle will usually be the New York Jets’ mock draft position

It is a rare mock draft that gives the New York Jets the consensus top tackle prospect at No. 10 overall.

That’s what Bucky Brooks of NFL.com just did, though.

His first mock draft has Notre Dame left tackle Joe Alt falling to the Jets at No. 10. Alt is the No. 1 tackle on the consensus big board at NFL Mock Draft Database, and the No. 7 prospect overall.

In Brooks’ mock, the Titans select Olu Fashanu at No. 7 and Alt is the second tackle off the board. This fall is made possible by back-to-back edge defenders selected at No. 8 and No. 9 in Brooks’ draft. In NFL Mock Draft Database’s consensus mock draft, EDGE Dallas Turner is the only defensive player in the top 10.

As the draft board stands now, it would be surprising to see Alt fall to No. 10. After initially slotting in behind Fashanu, Alt has risen to the top tackle spot on most draft boards. While Joe Blewett has not evaluated Alt, he has major questions about Fashanu and does not necessarily endorse the Penn State tackle for the No. 10 pick. If so, that gives Alt yet another edge over Fashanu.

The biggest questions on Alt’s draft profile concern his susceptibility to a bull rush and his 6-foot-8 frame that is not completely filled out yet. Still, many of his markers are reminiscent of Joe Tippmann’s at center in 2023: tall for the position but with excellent pass-blocking metrics and potential in the run game.

Brooks’ NFL.com colleague, Daniel Jeremiah, gave the Jets Oregon State right tackle Taliese Fuaga at No. 10 over Fashanu. It is therefore interesting to see Brooks place Fashanu ahead of even Alt. Furthermore, the NFL Mock Draft Database consensus has J.C. Latham ranked higher than Fuaga (16th vs. 19th), and their consensus mock draft has Latham going to the Jets at No. 10, while Fashanu has no consensus and Alt goes at No. 7 to Tennessee.

Expect to see these names repeated on mock drafts, especially if the top receiver prospects are off the board. The order will be very interesting to monitor, especially after the NFL Combine.
