New York Jets hire Darren Mougey as general manager

The two leaders of the New York Jets’ new regime have been solidified. Days after hiring Aaron Glenn as their new head coach, the Jets have hired Darren Mougey as their new general manager, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Mougey, formerly the Denver Broncos’ assistant general manager, will succeed Joe Douglas, who failed to surpass seven wins in any of his six seasons with the team. For Mougey, facilitating improvement in free agency and the NFL draft will be critical as the Jets look to build a sustained contender.

The Jets were down to three finalists for their GM job: Mougey, Washington Commanders assistant GM Lance Newmark, and Cincinnati Bengals senior personnel executive Trey Brown. Newmark was the first candidate to land a second interview, which took place on Tuesday (the same day as Glenn’s second interview), but Newmark left without a deal. The Jets proceeded to bring in Mougey and Brown for second interviews, ultimately landing on Mougey.

Mougey played quarterback at San Diego State before transitioning to wide receiver. He went undrafted in the 2009 NFL draft and would spend time with the Atlanta Falcons and Arizona Cardinals, but never played an NFL game.

In 2012, Mougey joined the Denver Broncos as a scouting intern. From there, he would begin his rise throughout the organization. Mougey served the following roles in Denver:

  • Scouting intern (2012)
  • Personnel and scouting assistant (2013)
  • College and pro personnel scout (2014)
  • Area scout (2015-19)
  • Assistant director of college scouting (2020)
  • Director of player personnel (2021)
  • Assistant general manager (2022-present)

It is worth noting that in 2021, the Broncos hired a new general manager, George Paton, and he decided to not only keep Mougey but promote him to director of player personnel. According to the Broncos’ website, Mougey “[oversaw] the day-to-day operations of the pro and college scouting departments” and “began to work directly with Paton on all personnel decisions.”

Paton explained his decision to promote Mougey despite being unfamiliar with him before arriving in Denver.

“I didn’t know Darren or many of the staff members when I got here, and he quickly shined,” Paton said, according to DenverBroncos.com. “His organizational skills, his detail, his ability to manage people. He had a great feel, obviously, for the draft. He was on the college side. I thought he was one of the better evaluators I’ve been around. And so he shined quickly. I thought we had a really good staff when I got here, but he stood out.”

Based on a Jets X-Factor study, Mougey was one of three candidates for the Jets’ GM job who most closely matched the typical resume of a successful GM in today’s NFL, joining Newmark and Green Bay’s Jon-Eric Sullivan. Mougey’s scouting background and previous experience as an assistant GM make his resume look very similar to those of acclaimed GMs such as Buffalo’s Brandon Beane and Baltimore’s Eric DeCosta. Whether he reaches those heights remains to be seen, but the Jets made a good bet by hiring a candidate with Mougey’s resume.

Mougey is left with little time to rest before the offseason kicks into full gear, as he and his new Jets staff must prepare for the start of Senior Bowl week next Tuesday.
