Former Florida State edge rusher Jermaine Johnson was seen as a steal of the 2022 draft when the New York Jets moved up to take him with the 26th overall pick.

After three seasons, New York has seen a glimpse of what the now 26-year-old can do – even if injuries have gotten in the way of the veteran’s effectiveness early in his career.

With just 11 days remaining between the start of the 2025 draft, though, it’s a perfect time for Johnson to be reflective on his roller coaster journey through the NFL.

Jets’ Top Edge Rusher Reflects on Draft-Day Vow

After a strong sophomore season in 2023 that saw Johnson record 7.5 sacks and the first Pro Bowl nod of his career, the FSU product tore his Achilles in the second game of the 2024 season.

The injury was a sign of things to come for New York as they stumbled to a 5-12 mark that prompted the organization to completely rebuild their front office and coaching staff.

With Aaron Glenn leading the way, an infusion of excitement has come to the organization again. That feeling has been passed to Johnson as he continues his recovery back onto the field.

With the team reminiscing on the night they took Johnson, the veteran was reflective on his own accord via social media Sunday afternoon.

“Man… time is flying!!” Johnson said on X/Twitter. “When I came here I vowed to be a big reason on why things around here change for the better. That is still my main focus! As my abilities return, so does the excitement… I’m working my ass off to give this team and organization all I possibly can. Through the Grace of God, I will deliver.

“2025 will be legendary!!”

Johnson has remained committed to helping to get the Jets back on a winning track over the last few seasons. He is entering a critical season in 2025, though, especially with the 2026 fifth-year option on his contract up for debate (the deadline for New York to decide is May 1 of this year).

New York and the edge rusher believe he will be able to have an immediate impact in 2025. But it’s imperative that the Jets keep an eye on the future as well.
