For the better part of the 2025 pre-draft process, the New York Jets have been mocked to several of the top offensive players coming out of college.
There’s good reason for that, too.
New York has key weaknesses on the offensive side of the ball, including right tackle, tight end, and wide receiver. In a draft class filled with top talent along the offensive and defensive lines, though, the Jets might be able to solve their offensive issues while addressing their defense early.
And with the seventh overall pick at their disposal, everything is on the table.
Jets’ Key Defensive Need
Multiple reports around the league have stated New York’s intention to focus on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.
Players like Texas cornerback Jahdae Barron and Georgia edge rusher Jalon Walker are two names that have been tied to the team the most at this stage of the pre-draft process.
Jets X-Factor can confirm the Jets had a strong interest in Walker during his pro day with the Bulldogs a few weeks ago. While listed as a defensive hybrid, Walker has the prowess to line up as both an off-ball linebacker and pass rusher, depending on the defensive scheme.
Jets fans may not think edge rusher is a serious need, but with Jermaine Johnson recovering from a torn Achilles, there’s an apparent concern at the position.
It’s unfair for the Jets to demand Johnson be back at 100% to kick off the 2025 season. Behind the former Florida State product, New York doesn’t have enough depth at the position, either.
Walker’s skill set is something the Jets sorely need. And his draft profile tells the full story.
“He’s tough but small as an early down edge rusher, but his athletic talent and suddenness to attack both edges make him a menace for tackles,” Lance Zuerlein of NFL Network said. “The most valuable usage for Walker is likely to come as an early down linebacker who can rush off the edge or match up across the line as a blitzer on passing downs.”
Don’t sleep on the Jets taking a defensive player earlier than expected. Walker would make a lot of sense for them moving forward.
