With their final pick in the 2026 NFL draft at No. 228 overall, the New York Jets have selected Kansas State safety VJ Payne.

Throughout 52 career NCAA games, Payne totaled 207 combo tackles (141 solo), one sack, four interceptions, 10 pass deflections, a fumble recovery, and four forced fumbles. In 2025, he collected 59 total tackles (40 solo), one interception, three pass deflections, and two forced fumbles.

Payne also graded out well, earning a 73.3 overall grade from Pro Football Focus. When targeted, he held opposing quarterbacks to just a 57.4 passer rating. Due to his ability to play in the open field, he is a versatile safety who can slide into the box when needed, standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 206 pounds.

Payne will join a Jets safety room headlined by Minkah Fitzpatrick, Dane Belton, and Malachi Moore.
