Entering their second week of training camp, the New York Jets received some unfortunate news on the injury front, although the outlook is positive moving forward.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq has suffered “a little setback” in his recovery from sports hernia surgery in late May. Glenn stated that Sadiq is on a “maintenance program” and should be ready for Week 1.
Sadiq, 21, was chosen by New York with the 16th overall pick in this year’s NFL draft. The Oregon product is one of the most athletic tight end prospects in football history. Registering a Relative Athletic Score of 10.00, he recorded a forty time of 4.39, a vertical jump of 43.5 inches, and a broad jump of 133 inches.
Sadiq fully participated in the first few practices of Jets training camp. The setback will keep him out for the time being, with the Jets’ first preseason game just 10 days away (Aug. 14, 7 p.m. EST, vs. Tampa Bay).
On the practice field, Sadiq was competing for reps in a deep Jets tight end room, which also features Mason Taylor and Jeremy Ruckert. Taylor was a second-round pick in 2025 and held down the Jets’ starting role admirably for a rookie. Ruckert signed an extension during the 2025 season as a reward for his progress as a blocker.
With Sadiq sidelined, Taylor and Ruckert will hold down the reps at the tight end position. Meanwhile, wide receivers like Omar Cooper Jr. and Isaiah Williams will receive more snaps in the slot, where Sadiq is also expected to frequently align.
