The New York Jets’ offense is off to a scorching start in the 2026 preseason.
Late in the first quarter, No. 2 running back Braelon Allen cutback for a 31-yard touchdown run to give the Jets a 10-0 lead over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their preseason opener.
Allen, 22, is looking to secure the Jets’ No. 2 running back spot going into his third NFL season. In 2025, Allen’s season was cut short after four games due to an MCL sprain in his left knee. Tonight marks Allen’s first live-game action since the injury.
The Wisconsin product stated in June that he has bulked up to 250 pounds after being listed at 235 pounds last season.
New York retains a 10-0 lead over the Buccaneers going into the second quarter of their exhibition matchup in East Rutherford, N.J. Tampa Bay did not play their starters, but the Jets played their starters on both sides of the ball, allowing each unit to play two drives.
Starting quarterback Geno Smith was ruled out from the game due to foot soreness just prior to kickoff, an injury that is not considered serious and would not have held him out of a regular season game. In turn, rookie quarterback Cade Klubnik got the start, staying in even once the starters sat down.
Entering the second quarter, Klubnik has completed 5 of 7 passes for 56 yards, no touchdowns, and no interceptions. Allen has rushed three times for 41 yards and one touchdown.
