New York Jets fans couldn’t have scripted a better first drive for quarterback Geno Smith to begin his preseason.

On the Jets’ opening drive against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Smith completed all seven of his passing attempts (with one deflection) for 65 yards and capped it off with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Jelani Woods.

Smith, 35, is making his preseason debut tonight after being a last-minute scratch last week due to foot soreness. To begin the game, Smith showed no signs of soreness whatsoever.

He looked comfortable and sprayed the ball out to six different pass catchers throughout his seven attempts.

As for Woods, he has had a strong summer as he fights for a spot on the team’s 53-man roster. While there is a high level of competition in New York’s tight end room, it is trending towards the former third-round pick earning a roster spot.

On top of his strong showing so far, he has also played under offensive coordinator Frank Reich, which has added comfort with the team’s offensive scheme.

The Jets currently lead the Steelers 7-0 as the first quarter continues after their defense forced a three-and-out against Will Howard and Pittsburgh’s offense.
