The New York Jets’ kicking competition has been one of the top storylines around the team this summer.

It had seemed as if Jason Sanders was distinguishing himself in the battle, not only because of his strong showings throughout training camp, but also because his career track record is much more encouraging than Cade York’s.

While that second part remains accurate, Monday’s training camp practice was not pretty for either kicker.

According to reporters on the scene in Florham Park, Sanders hit just two of his five field goal attempts, with misses from 38, 43, and 54 yards.

On the other hand, York’s showing wasn’t much better, reportedly going three of five with misses from 38 and 44 yards.

Throughout the preseason, Sanders has been ahead in the battle, drilling both of his extra point tries and field goal attempts. While York is two for two on PATs, he is one of two on FGs, missing a 59-yard attempt and also barely making a 38-yarder that sailed over the upright and arguably could have been ruled a miss.

When it comes to overall NFL track records, Sanders has the clear upper hand. He spent each of his first eight NFL seasons with the Miami Dolphins and finished his tenure with 27 consecutive made field goals in the 2024 NFL season, a Miami franchise record. Overall, Sanders made 84.6% of his field goal attempts for the Dolphins.

However, Sanders missed the entirety of the 2025 season due to a hip injury that he sustained last preseason. He’s had an entire year to recover, though.

In contrast, York has been a journeyman. Since entering the league as a fourth-round pick in 2022, he’s spent time with seven different teams in five NFL seasons while making just 73.3% of his field goal attempts over 23 regular-season games.

While Sanders still seems to be in the lead, Monday’s practice was not encouraging for either competitor.
