Injuries are always prevalent throughout training camp, and unfortunately for the New York Jets, several key players have been sidelined this summer.
However, the updates are becoming more promising for New York.
Speaking to the media on Monday, head coach Aaron Glenn announced that Breece Hall (groin), Kenyon Sadiq (hernia), D’Angelo Ponds (calf), and Isaiah Davis (knee) are all on track to be ready for Week 1.
Furthermore, he added that Nahshon Wright (hip), Qwan’tez Stiggers (concussion protocol), and Kiko Mauigoa (hamstring) have begun practicing again in a limited capacity while Kingsley Enagbare, Joseph Ossai, and T’Vondre Sweat are now full go.
Having all four of Hall, Sadiq, Ponds, and Davis back for Week 1 will be crucial. The Jets seemed to have avoided disaster with Hall’s injury just amounting to a minor groin issue, and sidelining him until Week 1 makes sense.
Ponds is still working his way back from a calf injury that he suffered during the Jets’ first training camp practice, while Sadiq is recovering from a setback he dealt with following his hernia procedure.
By missing time, it is fair to surmise that Wright and Stiggers may have lost ground in their respective competitions within the Jets’ cornerback room. Wright has not been able to push Azareye’h Thomas, who has played very well throughout the preseason, flashing legitimate CB1 upside.
As for Stiggers’ competitors on the back end of the depth chart, players like Tre Brown, Samuel Womack III, and Jordan Clark have performed well in the preseason. Both Brown and Clark have logged a pass deflection, while Womack came away with a pretty interception during the team’s Week 2 preseason clash.
The Jets are finally getting healthier, which is always encouraging, but injuries have caused certain players to fall behind in their respective positional battles.
