While the New York Jets left Nashville with a win on Sunday, they got hit with several tough injuries.
One of the several players to sustain an injury on Sunday was first-round rookie wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr.
According to The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero, Cooper Jr. is “believed” to have suffered a high ankle sprain.
“X-rays were negative. Cooper, the first-round pick, will have an MRI on Monday to determine the extent of the injury,” Pelissero wrote.
Depending on the severity, a high ankle sprain could keep players out for a while. Typically, recovery takes 4-6 weeks, but it could be around eight if it’s very severe and as little as 1-2 if it’s minor.
Right now, there is no clarity on the severity.
On Sunday, Cooper made his NFL debut and hauled in his only target for a 30-yard catch-and-run while forcing multiple missed tackles along the way. He put the Jets within striking distance to score their first touchdown of the day, a three-yard rush for rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq.
Missing Cooper for an extended period would be tough for the Jets. He is expected to play a heavy role in the Jets’ passing attack this season, and losing him would be far from ideal for the team. Next up on the team’s WR depth chart would be Isaiah Williams, who is primarily a returner.
Over the rest of the game, Williams caught his only target for 7 yards while filling in for Cooper as the team’s primary slot receiver.
Monday’s MRI will clarify the timeline for Cooper’s return.
