Fresh off his second 100-yard game in three weeks, Garrett Wilson is establishing himself as the New York Jets’ face of the franchise on the field.

He continues to earn that title off the field, too.

The thinking behind the decision

Although over $100M in dead cap is coming off the books, the New York Jets have plenty of tough decisions to make during the 2027 offseason. Deciding which of these decisions is the most important may shape the direction the organization takes.

Your choice changes this single-scenario snapshot. A release or trade opens a roster spot; a restructure creates current-year room at a future cost; a fifth-year option decision looks one year further ahead.

These are alternatives, not a sequence of moves. The opening effective cap is the current simulator packageโ€™s $99.23M total room minus $19.70M net draft reserve. The figures are projections, not a live team ledger.

Always one to stick up for his teammates, Wilson won’t even accept slander from video game developers.

On the Monday following New York’s 17-12 win over the Cleveland Browns, the official account for Madden Ultimate Team shared a poll asking fans to vote for this week’s “Madden 27 Team of the Week Champion”. The four options are Bengals safety Jordan Battle, Broncos edge rusher Nik Bonitto, Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth, and Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow.

Not listed? Jets edge rusher David Bailey, who had three sacks and nine pressures against a previously 3-1 squad.

Wilson wasn’t having it. “We had a guy with 3 sacks…”, replied the wideout.

Bailey, the second overall pick, was everywhere in New York’s victory. In addition to his three sacks, he had five hurries and a quarterback hit, bringing him to nine total pressures, the fifth-best total by any defender this season. Bailey also halted two screen plays for short gains and had two stops against the run.

Wilson, meanwhile, caught 7 of 11 targets for 104 yards and a touchdown in the Jets’ victory. Through five games, he has caught 32 of 41 targets for 374 yards and three touchdowns. He is averaging career-bests in yards per game (74.8), receptions per game (6.2), and touchdowns per game (0.75).

When your best player on the field is also among your best leaders off of it, you feel pretty good about giving him a $130 million contract.
