With the NFL trade deadline only 10 days away, the 2-5 New York Jets have been shrouded in one of the goofiest trade rumors the franchise has ever witnessed.
That “rumor” has been put to rest by one of the NFL’s most plugged-in reporters.
Taking to X on Saturday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that, according to a “well-placed source”, there is “no way” that New York will trade star wide receiver Garrett Wilson’s ahead of the Nov. 10 trade deadline.
The recent chatter about a Wilson trade never originated from a substantiated place. It was mere speculation drummed up by fans and analysts of other NFL teams who erroneously assumed that Wilson might be available due to the Jets’ 2-5 start, conveniently ignoring that New York already has three first-round picks in 2027 and has no incentive to deal their best player for future assets.
The hoopla also partially arose from a viral clip of Wilson having a heated exchange with quarterback Geno Smith during the team’s recent embarrassing loss to the previously winless Miami Dolphins. Wilson received only three targets in the defeat, continuing a recent trend of the star wideout receiving fewer targets than he clearly deserves.
Wilson downplayed the moment when speaking to the media.
“I don’t want it to ever be misconstrued. This all comes from a place in my heart of wanting to win. It’s frustrating, for sure, because I want to have an impact and I want to help the team. But really, I just want to help the team, man. Sometimes it might come off a certain way when they [show] video, but, man, that’s all it’s about.”
Wilson also shot down the trade rumors, although he admitted, quite bluntly, that the five years of losing in New York have him frustrated.
“Yeah, I want to be here, man,” he said. “I want to win games and that’s the one thing we’ve been missing on here. I love it here. Do I love it more than I love winning? Nah, to be completely honest, but I’m hopeful.
“I’ve never been the best optimistic guy, but I’ve found a way and dug deep, and I’ve been optimistic for three, four, five years now. And that’s why these [losses] each weekend hurt a little more.”
Wilson and the Jets will host the 3-4 Las Vegas Raiders at MetLife Stadium on Sunday afternoon (1 p.m. EST).
