Restricted free agent Mike White tendered by New York Jets

On the third day of free agency, the New York Jets have turned their attention to their own free agents. Joe Flacco and Dan Feeney will return. Exclusive rights free agents Jeff Smith, Elijah Riley, and Tim Ward are coming back.

New York also moved one step closer to retaining two of its restricted free agents.

Kicker Eddy Pineiro received a right-of-first-refusal tender. Now, quarterback Mike White has been given an original-round tender for $2.6 million, per the New York Post’s Brian Costello.

White is still free to negotiate with other teams. The Jets have the right to match the offer if he agrees with another team.

If New York declines to match an offer sheet signed by White, the Jets would receive trade compensation from White’s new team. Since the Jets chose the original-round tender and White was drafted in the fifth round of the 2018 draft, the Jets would receive a fifth-round pick for White.

White appeared in four games for the Jets in 2021, starting three of those. He completed 88 of 132 passes for 953 yards, five touchdowns, and eight interceptions, averaging 7.2 yards per attempt and earning a 75.1 passer rating.

By the end of the season, White was the third quarterback on the Jets’ depth chart behind Joe Flacco. With Flacco returning to the Jets this year, it seems likely that White will assume his No. 3 spot on the depth chart going into training camp if he does stick around in New York.

The door remains open for White to negotiate with other teams, so his return is not yet official.
