Contract talks between the New York Jets and Sauce Gardner are ongoing, and the two-time All-Pro is not hesitating to comment on the matter.

Using his trademark social media subtlety, Gardner commented on his contract negotiations through a fascinating quote tweet on Saturday morning. Before we share Gardner’s latest tweet, though, we need to dig into the lore of this situation.

On March 10, Deion Sanders sent a tweet in which he implored NFL cornerbacks to “stand up for themselves” in an effort to earn bigger contracts. Sanders’ tweet was sent in reply to a tweet by Gardner on March 9, in which Gardner asked the world, “Can somebody educate me on why the CB market is significantly lower than DE/WR?”

This morning (Saturday, June 28), Gardner revisited the March exchange between him and Sanders. He quoted Sanders’ tweet and replied with a simple “salute” emoji.

What does this mean? Who knows. Perhaps Gardner is letting Sanders know that he is heeding the Hall-of-Famer’s words by standing on his desired number in contract negotiations. Maybe it means Gardner is closing in on an agreement that will alter the cornerback market.

Nobody can know for sure what Gardner meant with this tweet, but it is interesting to speculate. Modern-day professional athletes love to stir the pot with these cryptic tweets and watch the world scramble to solve their riddles, and since it’s June 28 and we have nothing better to do, we are more than happy to oblige.
