The New York Jets’ kicking battle is officially over.
While the team waived Cade York on Tuesday morning, leaving Jason Sanders as the only kicker on New York’s roster, there was still speculation the team could add another veteran at the position.
Now, that speculation has officially been put to bed.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Jets special teams coordinator Chris Banjo confirmed that Sanders has won the Jets’ kicking job.
“We are going to be moving on from Cade,” Banjo said. “He did a great job for us all throughout training camp and all throughout the evaluation process and in the games as well. But we feel really, really good about what Jason is and where we are with him right now, the experience he’s kind of had in our division, kicking in our division.”
This outcome was ultimately expected. Right away, Sanders had the upper hand due to his steady NFL career, while York has been with seven different teams throughout his five years in the pros.
Throughout Sanders’ eight-year career, he owns a field goal percentage of 84% while hitting on 33 of his 48 tries from beyond 50 yards (68.7%) with a career long of 57 yards.
He didn’t play in the 2025 season as he recovered from a hip injury sustained in the preseason, but in 2024 he made 27 consecutive field goals, setting a Dolphins franchise record.
As he enters his ninth NFL season, the Jets will be just his second team, and he is quite experienced kicking in MetLife Stadium due to his extended time with the Dolphins.
At least to begin the season, Sanders will be the Jets’ kicker, according to Banjo.
