Ahead of the New York Jets’ Week 1 matchup, the team announced that they are placing wide receiver Tim Patrick on injured reserve due to a groin injury. The move comes in conjunction with kicker Jason Sanders being added to the 53-man roster.
Patrick, 32, is a seven-year NFL veteran. He signed with the Jets in May after spending the 2025 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars. In 16 games with Jacksonville, he had three starts, catching 15 of his 24 targets for 187 yards and three touchdowns.
The 32-year-old is expected to serve as a depth piece in the Jets’ wide receiver room. Garrett Wilson leads the way while Gang Green is banking on Adonai Mitchell taking a Year 2 leap, along with a strong rookie campaign from first-round pick Omar Cooper Jr.
Patrick, alongside Isaiah Williams and Arian Smith, rounds out the position group. While Patrick doesn’t offer special teams ability like Williams and Smith, his run-blocking game helped him make the team.
In each of the past three seasons, he’s tallied a 60.0+ run-blocking grade (above league-average) from Pro Football Focus.
Now that he is on IR, Patrick will be forced to miss a minimum of four games before he can return to the field. Following the four-game minimum, the Jets could open up their practice window, which spans 21 days.
During that 21-day period, the Jets must activate him back to the 53-man roster, or he remains on IR for the remainder of the season.
His injury shouldn’t impact the Jets too much, as the team typically dresses five receivers on game day. Patrick, before the injury, was one of New York’s six wideouts, and the case could be made that he was already going to be a game-day inactive.
