Amid their Week 1 matchup, the New York Jets have received some unfortunate injury news.

Just after the start of the second half, the Jets announced that wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. has been ruled out due to an ankle injury, while safety Minkah Fitzpatrick is doubtful to return because of a groin issue.

Cooper, a first-round rookie, caught his lone target during his NFL debut for a 30-yard catch-and-run, which put the Jets near the goal line before fellow rookie Kenyon Sadiq punched it through for a three-yard rushing TD.

It’s disappointing that his Week 1 will be cut short, especially after such a promising start to his NFL career.

As for Fitzpatrick, the Jets must hope that his injury isn’t severe. He is expected to play a huge role in the Jets’ defense this season and is the face of the team’s revamped safety room.

Cornerback Jarvis Brownlee Jr. is also questionable to return due to a calf injury. That’s another tough blow as he is the Jets’ only true slot CB who was active entering the game. Projected starter D’Angelo Ponds is inactive due to a calf strain that wiped out nearly the entirety of his summer.

With Fitzpatrick sidelined, who has nickel experience, the team is at a further disadvantage.

The good news for now is that neither injury has slowed them down so far. New York holds a 17-3 lead over Tennessee in the third quarter and has been in the driver’s seat throughout much of the game.
