Cam Newton is the newest New England Patriots quarterback but New York Jets fans shouldn’t worry too much. It’s a strange fit.
Start the panic. Woe are New York Jets fans who can never have anything nice. Despite exciting strides that included an overhaul of the offensive line, what looks to be an excellent draft class, and the momentum that is Sam Darnold‘s third year, Cam Newton to the New England Patriots has seemed to stop the good times for the Jets fan.
After all, they simply cannot have nice things.
Stop. Relax. Think about the match on the field.
What Newton does well on the field doesn’t match up with what the Pats’ offensive scheme currently looks like.
Newton loves to hold on to the ball. He loves to extend the play and look to break the pocket in the passing game. His aggressive nature and length of play completely clash with Tom Brady‘s game and Josh McDaniels’ way of running an offense in today’s three-step league.
At the same time, if the Pats look to move to a run-heavy scheme, Newton presents a danger—even at his age. Mixing a zone-read scheme with some of the things the Pats do well in both a gap and zone scheme can present serious danger to defensive coordinators. But for now, relax. That coaching staff has a lot of work to do.
Plus, we look at Jamal Adams’ latest social media words. At this point, it seems as though he’s just toying with fans by calling out Belichick for signing Newton.
