New York Jets general manager Joe Douglas answers the media’s questions about Deebo Samuel
With exactly one week remaining until the 2022 NFL draft, New York Jets general manager Joe Douglas took the podium on Thursday morning to answer questions from the media in Florham Park.
Of course, with Douglas’ press conference occurring less than 24 hours after it was announced that San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel had requested a trade, it was inevitable that Douglas would face questions about potentially trading for the star wideout.
Douglas did his best to dance around the questions.
“Really no specifics, can’t get into specifics when it comes to a player that’s not on our roster,” Douglas said when asked about Samuel. “I’ll just say that since coming here I’ve made it known my job is to get the team better and we’re going to do that via any avenue we can.”
Douglas received another question about Samuel that referenced the team’s previous pursuit of now-Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill. He reiterated his previous statements in which he suggested the team would be aggressive if an opportunity came up.
“If the right opportunity presents itself, we are going to be aggressive,” Douglas said.

Douglas also spoke about other topics. In regards to the draft, he said the team’s primary goal is to support quarterback Zach Wilson.
“I think when you break it down to keeping the main things the main things, it’s going to be about developing and helping our young quarterback,” Douglas said.

Douglas stated that offensive tackle Mekhi Becton remains in Dallas, Texas with his medical team and is not in New Jersey for the team’s voluntary workouts.
“These are voluntary. Just in terms of Mekhi, we’ve had great dialogue and discussion back and forth with his medical team back in Dallas. So, we’re on top of everything with him right now. Again, these are voluntary sessions with the team.”
Mekhi Becton is not participating in the Jets' offseason program.
