NY Jets name new defensive captain, but no offensive captain

In the wake of Aaron Rodgers’ injury, the New York Jets have named Quinnen Willaims their third team captain

During his media availability on Friday, New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh announced that Quinnen Williams would be the Jets’ third captain for the rest of the season, joining C.J. Mosley and Justin Hardee. He replaces Aaron Rodgers, who was initially chosen as one of the team’s three captains.

Saleh also said that Williams finished fourth in voting for captains before the start of the season and figured that it made sense to give the star defensive lineman the “C” patch.

“That guy is such a big vocal leader in this room and on this team. He says all the right things, he does all the right things and stands for everything that we believe in,” said Saleh.

When asked about a new offensive captain, Saleh stated that he had not considered one at this point, which reflects the current state of the roster. With the offense going through multiple issues, the defense will be further relied upon to help keep the Jets in games.

Williams, a first-team All-Pro selection last year, has continued his great play in the trenches for the Jets’ defense. He remains the best player on a talented defensive line, causing havoc in both phases.

Now, Williams is not only being recognized for his talent level but his leadership abilities, too. And as the Jets head into a challenging portion of their schedule, Williams will have to ensure the team stays in the right direction both on the field and off of it.
