The Jets-Raiders rivalry, and how it made TV History
The New York Jets and Las Vegas Raiders have one of the fiercest rivalries that nobody’s heard of. It dates back all the way to the days of the AFL. Despite not playing in the same division, the two teams were always at each other’s throats, with the Raiders often playing underhanded tricks.
For example, in 1963, the Raiders and Jets completed a trade for Guard Dan Ficca. However, Raiders general manager and owner Al Davis didn’t inform Jets general manager and head coach Weeb Ewbank that Ficca wouldn’t be available for 6 weeks due to his military service.
Another example is legendary coach John Madden, when he was an assistant, was in charge of sending videos to other teams. When they played the Jets, Madden made sure the video showed up a day or two later than it was supposed to.
Ewbank even accused Al Davis of hiring people to spy on Jets’ practices. There’s a reason why Joe Namath said he liked the Raiders least of any AFL team.
So when these two teams played in 1968, as favorites to win the AFL and head to Super Bowl III, it was must-see television. The game turned into a high-scoring shootout, the Jets leading the game late 32-29 with just a minute left.
That’s when NBC switched the television broadcast on the East Coast to the television film Heidi. A decision they’d live to regret as the Raiders would score two touchdowns in the closing minute to walk away with a 43-32 victory.
It was indeed a day that will forever live in Jets infamy.
The rivalry remains intense even to this day, even if not to the level it had once burned. Over their last eight games against each other, the Jets and Raiders are 4-4, including 3-3 in the last six, and 1-1 in the last two.
