Who won the Matthew Stafford trade?

With the Los Angeles Rams and Detroit Lions going head-to-head in a playoff game, it feels appropriate to look back on the moment that changed both of these franchises: the Matthew Stafford trade. Or, should it be called the Jared Goff trade?

It was a somber time in Detroit in 2021. After another disappointing season Matt Stafford, the face of the franchise for more than a decade, had been traded. It was time to start over with Jared Goff set to hold down the fort through the lean years. Seeing Stafford win a Super Bowl that season for the Rams only made things hurt that much more.

But then something changed. In 2022, Stafford battled through injury and showed that age was catching up to him. Meanwhile, Jared Goff turned a corner and looked like the quarterback that had gotten the Rams to a Super Bowl appearance. In 2023, those trends continued. Goff remained an upper-echelon quarterback this season, while Stafford has shown he’s not quite at the level he showed just a few years ago.

If that was all there was to it it’s easy to say the Rams won the deal. After all, they got a Super Bowl out of it, and they’re still competing this year. But that’s not it.

The Lions also got a bevy of draft picks that have helped them completely turn around their team. A third-round pick in 2021 turned into Ifeatu Melifonwu who’s played a crucial role as the Lions’ nickel defensive back. Detroit then used the first-round pick it acquired in the trade to trade up for Jameson Williams, their deep threat.

Then, they used their 2023 first-round pick to trade back and select Jahmyr Gibbs, their star running back, Sam LaPorta, the rookie who made 2nd Team All-Pro TE, and Brodric Martine, a developmental DT.

So if you’re keeping score at home, that’s a starting WR, a star RB, an All-Pro TE, and a nickel DB on top of Jared Goff. All pieces that have turned the Lions from fringe playoff contender to full-blown Super Bowl contender. And all of those pieces are currently on rookie deals.

It’s hard to call the Rams the losers in this deal, after all, they did get a Super Bowl out of the deal, but you can’t call the Lions losers. Perhaps no deal in recent memory has been more of a win-win than this one. The Rams got the ring they were chasing, while the Lions built their future.

What’s going to happen when they meet head-to-head, though?

bet365 Odds: Los Angeles Rams vs. Detroit Lions

The Lions come into this one as the favorites, but only because of home-field advantage. They’re currently showcased as the standard home team 3-point favorite—which is to say that bet365 doesn’t see much of anything separating the two teams.

Still, the Lions are the home team and they’re rightfully favored after going 6-2 at home this season. Detroit is given -160 odds to win the game outright. Meanwhile, the Rams, 5-4 on the road this year, are given +145 odds to pull off the “upset” in this one.

Offense is expected to reign supreme in this one. The point total is set at over/under 52 points. That’s the highest total of any game on Wildcard Weekend. Not much of a surprise when the 5th and 8th-ranked scoring offenses go head to head.
