The superstitious ESPN analyst hates the New York Jets’ opening matchup with San Francisco
The New York Jets begin the season in San Francisco on Monday Night Football. One prominent Jets fan is falling apart.
ESPN’s Mike Greenberg, known as Greeny, a host of ESPN’s Get Up show, went on an epic rant about the Jets’ opening game. He’s having flashbacks to a different opening Monday Night Football game on September 11, 2023.

Greenberg raved, “I’m not sure I can make it through the rest of the day. Ladies and gentlemen, the only thing I asked for as the NFL schedule release came out was, do not let the Jets open on Monday night… so what was I just told? Hey, Roger [Goodell], what did I do to you? … The Jets are opening on Monday night at San Francisco against one of the toughest defensive lines in the world. I have seen this movie. It ends quickly and very, very badly.”
He then added that the Jets shouldn’t send Aaron Rodgers to San Francisco but instead play backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor in Week 1. In a frenzy, he went as far as to demand, “Get Zach Wilson back.”
Greenberg is, of course, referring to Rodgers’ season-ending torn Achilles four plays into the Jets’ Monday night matchup with the Buffalo Bills.
“Here’s what I was considering, was an actual exorcism,” Greenberg explained after other hosts needled him about his gameday plans. “We get all the same people back… I’m going to order the same exact food, and we’re going to watch the game in the same place.”
No one tell Greeny that the man who hit Rodgers, Leonard Floyd, is now on the 49ers. He might just have a heart attack.
San Francisco has Achilles demons of their own to exorcise. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw, a key cog in their defense, tore his Achilles coming into the Super Bowl off the sideline.
The Jets just hope (and pray) that this year’s season opener goes better than 2023’s. More important than a victory is getting Rodgers (and Tyron Smith, and Mike Williams, and Alijah Vera-Tucker, and everyone else) out unscathed.
