The New York Jets edge rusher is seeking a new contract
The New York Jets may have a distraction on their hands.
Haason Reddick, the edge rusher whom the Jets acquired from the Eagles for a conditional 2026 third-round pick, stayed silent when asked at a Saturday charity event whether he plans to attend the Jets’ mandatory minicamp. He skipped OTAs, forfeiting a $250,000 bonus, but those workouts were optional. Mandatory minicamp runs from June 11-13.
Robert Saleh previously said that he expects Reddick to attend mandatory minicamp but has not been in touch with him. Reddick is seeking a new deal, as he is in the final year of his deal and his $14.25 million 2024 salary is not guaranteed.
Michael Nania already explained why it would serve the Jets best to keep Reddick for one year and then let him walk. This was likely impractical considering that the Eagles traded Reddick due to his desire for a new deal.
On that note, the Jets may have made a critical mistake in their trade for Reddick. They should have worked out a contract with Reddick prior to making the deal.
Additionally, Reddick’s $15 million cap hit in 2024 is likely what he’s actually worth. While he is excellent at racking up sacks, he is somewhat overrated when it comes to the consistency of his pass rush, and is not worth $20 million per season. A good comparison for him is the Dolphins’ Bradley Chubb, who has a $22 million average annual value but is similarly inconsistent in causing pressure.
It remains to be seen how Joe Douglas will approach Reddick’s contract situation. Things could get ugly, though, if Reddick carries a holdout into minicamp or even training camp.
