New York Jets safety Jaylen Key is set to participate in the upcoming “Irrelevant Week”
One of the newest New York Jets is set to be honored for being “irrelevant” this week.
According to a tweet from ESPN’s Rich Cimini, rookie safety Jaylen Key is set to participate in “Irrelevant Week.” The week is set to have a welcoming party, a trip to Disneyland, an Angels game, sailing, and media opportunities. He will also receive the “Lowsman Trophy” (a parody of the Heisman Trophy) and raise money for charity.
Starting tomorrow, #Jets rookie Jaylen Key — aka Mr. Irrelevant — will be feted in Newport Beach, Calf, as part of weeklong “Irrelevant Week” celebration. Key was selected with the 257th and final pick in the 2024 NFL draft, earning him this year’s “Mr. Irrelevant” title.
The NFL has seriously increased the pageantry surrounding the “Mr. Irrelevant” pick in the draft compared to previous years. The player used to only receive a jersey; now, there is an entire week dedicated to the last pick of the draft.
While it is nice for Key to be celebrated in this fashion, he would much rather prove the Mr. Irrelevant label wrong. In an extremely open safety room, Key has the potential to make a positive impact during training camp and the preseason. He was a secure tackler in college and flashed some ballhawk ability with four interceptions in his career.
The last Mr. Irrevelvant to make a considerable impact was 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy. The Iowa State product went from the last pick in the 2022 draft to one of the top quarterbacks in the league.
Key may not reach the productivity of Purdy right off the bat, but if he can make an impact at the safety position for New York, the rookie will not be irrelevant for long.
