This New York Jets concern could affect an entire phase of the game
If there’s one thing New York Jets fans count on, it’s the team’s defense.
If there’s one part of their defense fans question, it’s the safety position. If there’s another, it’s how Will McDonald and Haason Reddick will replace Bryce Huff and John Franklin-Myers.
The defensive tackle position falls a distant third in most conversations about the Jets’ defense. Perhaps it’s because Quinnen Williams is a top-three defensive tackle in the NFL. Maybe it’s because fans have confidence that Robert Saleh and Jeff Ulbrich can get the most out of Javon Kinlaw.
But on the newest episode of The Score Boord Podcast, I enumerated my concerns with the Jets’ defensive tackle room and why I think it could be the single biggest problem on their defense.
Two massive downgrades on the interior is no joke for a team that was already porous in that area. Paying a starter twice as much as his backup when the backup may be somewhat better is an ominous sign.
Other topics that came up on the episode:
- Whether or not I am a New York Jets fan (is that something Jet X readers question?)
- Why Solomon Thomas was my background photo
In all seriousness…
- How the Jets can get around their defensive tackle problem
- The defense’s general problems with discipline
- Why an upgrade at safety can mask the defensive tackle issue to an extent
- What other factors will help the run defense
- Quincy Williams’ ascent
