What do the analytics say about the New York Jets?
Staying in a New York Jets echo chamber is always fun.
Listening to the cold, hard statistics from an outsider? Much more realistic.
That’s why I invited FTN Fantasy’s Aaron Schatz on The Score Boord Podcast to talk Jets. Schatz is largely the king of analytics. As the creator of DVOA (Defense-adjusted Yards Over Average), a statistic we use all the time at Jets X-Factor, he contributed a key metric to understand football beyond the box score statistics. Schatz continues to provide more granular DVOA metrics, giving Jet X writers more specific analytical content to write about.
Schatz shared that when he posted on X about Breece Hall’s miserable running situation, Hall messaged him to say he knows what he’s talking about. We already know Hall is acutely aware of what people are saying about him on social media. A private message to a non-Jets writer cements that.
This isn't really much of a dis on Breece Hall, by the way. He's facing a ton of stacked boxes because the passing game sucks, and the Jets rank 29th in ESPN's Run Block Win Rate. He's not in a good position to succeed and thus he is not succeeding. https://t.co/I5g5uc14Jv

Some of the topics we discussed:
- How good Sauce Gardner really is and why his current social media reputation is ridiculous
- Whether tight end is really the Jets’ biggest roster weakness
- Realistic expectations for Aaron Rodgers
- If pressure rate or sacks is more important when talking about edge rusher impact
- How the Jets’ selection of Olu Fashanu over Brock Bowers made sense
- The FTN Almanac expectations for the Jets in 2024
Schatz also weighed in on some of the quarterback contract situations around the NFL. He has an MVP vote and was the lone person not to vote for Lamar Jackson for MVP in 2023. Schatz voted for Josh Allen. He explained why he discounted Brock Purdy despite outstanding statistics, what his view of Purdy and Tua Tagovailoa is, his take on Jared Goff and Trevor Lawrence, and why he thinks Jordan Love’s contract situation is the riskiest.
