The New York Jets have a few pieces of injury news
The training camp train keeps on rolling.
At Friday’s press conference, New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh gave updates on some of the team’s injured players.
Saleh said that offensive guard Alijah Vera-Tucker would be on a pitch count going forward and that “he’s an elite player at his position, so it was good to have him out there.” He mentioned that Tyron Smith had a “scheduled day off.”
The head coach said he was still waiting for information on cornerback Brandin Echols, who left Friday’s practice with an injury. He also spoke about the statuses of wide receiver Xavier Gipson and offensive lineman Jake Hanson.
“Gipson is going to be a week or two. Dealing with a lower extremity. Jake Hanson is also going to be a couple of weeks.”
In conjunction with the Gipson news, Saleh spoke about rookie Malachi Corley and how he can take advantage of his opportunity.
“His route running is getting there. He still has a long way to go. With Xavier (Gipson) being down for a week or so, it’s going to be a great opportunity for him to get a lot of reps. It will be on him to put in the extra work, which he does, and find a way to get better every day.”
Even with some players being banged up, the news is still positive. The injured players should be able to return quickly and pick up where they left off.
In the interim, there are opportunities for the likes of Corley and other wide receivers, such as Malik Taylor and Jason Brownlee, to step up. Corley has all of the talent to make an instant impact, while Taylor and Brownlee made their marks in last year’s training camp.
Opportunities come in unexpected ways for players in the NFL, and it will be very interesting to see how some players on the Jets take advantage of them in the coming weeks.
