One of the New York Jets’ biggest additions of the 2024 offseason is one step closer to returning.

In a post from the team’s X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, the team announced that Mike Williams was activated off the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

With Williams off the list, he will now start ramping up to be ready for Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers. The veteran wideout may not immediately be in peak form, but it is beginning to look unlikely that he will not suit up for the start of the season.

As for the Jets’ overall offense, this is a huge development. Williams is one of the Jets’ most important offensive players, as he is expected to be the primary complement to Garrett Wilson in the wide receiver room. He will likely serve as the main contested catch and deep-threat weapon for the offense, opening up more room for Wilson, Breece Hall, and the rest of the team’s weapons.

Furthermore, Williams’s activation means that there is less pressure on the team’s evaluation of the depth options at receiver. Players like Malachi Corley, Xavier Gipson, Allen Lazard, Jason Brownlee, and Malik Taylor can make their progress without having to be relied upon in extensive roles.

Williams still has a process ahead of him to return to the field. But with his activation, the path to his return is much clearer than it was only a few days ago.
