One of the New York Jets’ biggest rivals in the AFC East has lost a key contributor.
According to multiple sources, including ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Buffalo Bills linebacker Matt Milano is out indefinitely with a torn biceps. Schefter added that Milano will attempt to return later in the year, possibly in December.

It is a crushing blow for Buffalo, as Milano is one of the best linebackers in football. He elevates their defensive unit and consistently makes game-changing plays. Furthermore, Buffalo’s linebacker depth is shaky behind Milano, putting the defense in a potentially precarious situation.
The Bills got only five games from Milano in 2023, as he sustained a season-ending leg injury. Still, they went 9-3 in the games without him. However, the key difference is that Tyrel Dodson, Milano’s primary replacement, is no longer with the team. Dodson posted an 82.6 Pro Football Focus run defense grade and allowed just 6.6 yards per target last season.
For New York, this injury may open up their window to win the division even further. Without Milano on defense, the Bills may be more susceptible to big plays and giving up points. It makes attacking the middle of the field and running the ball much easier.
Buffalo shouldn’t be counted out by any stretch of the imagination, but the defense’s loss of Milano sets up Miami and New York as the two likest competitors at the beginning of the year. They have overall rosters and better depth than Buffalo sans Milano.
The Jets have the roster to win the AFC East. They have the best defense in the division and an offense that could take a giant leap with Aaron Rodgers under center. Now, it all comes down to execution and capitalizing on the opportunity.
The doorway is open for New York to step through. The AFC East is there for the taking. If the Jets take care of the games they can win, breaking the playoff drought and winning the division are very much in play.
