The great New York Jets 53-man roster debate

As the New York Jets’ releases slowly trickle in, the focus will be on a few specific players. Safety Al Blades Jr., running back Xazavian Valladay, and defensive tackle Jaylen Twyman were expected cuts, but there are others whose status is unknown.

How many defensive linemen will the Jets keep? Receivers? Cornerbacks? Linebackers? Running backs? Special teams-only players? These are some of the most interesting decisions the team will make before 4 p.m. ET on August 27.

Jet X founder and co-owner Robby Sabo put out a 53-man roster projection. He joined The Score Boord Podcast to defend his predictions against my own. Some heated debate ensued.

One difference off the bat is that Robby included Haason Reddick on the Reserve/Did Not Report list and one of Jarrick Bernard-Converse or Isaiah Oliver on injured reserve, giving him two more roster spots to work with. Perhaps that would have brought our stances closer together. Still, there were other disparities between our predictions.

Here are some of the topics we discussed.

  • Whether Robert Saleh’s enthusiasm (or lack thereof) about a player in press conferences indicates something about their roster projection
  • The degree to which special teams and gameday inactives influence the final roster
  • How the Jets’ front office approaches roster construction
  • Which players the Jets can sneak through to the practice squad
  • Two players whom many Jets fans included on their 53-man rosters but I left off mine
  • The Jets’ plans at edge rusher sans Reddick
