The child of a former New York Jets running back is looking to make his own mark in the game of football.
In my exclusive interview with Leon Washington Jr., I asked FAU’s freshman wide receiver about the impact that his father has had on him as a player.

“I definitely got some of my features and moves from my dad, just by human nature. But he always told me to create my own path. I kind of do my own thing, and he supports it all the way.”
Additionally, Washington shared a memory from his dad’s playing career that made him fall in love with football.
“I would say the Pro Bowl. I went to the Pro Bowl twice, specifically, the one when he was with the Seahawks. It absolutely was a great experience. All the players I got to meet and watched all of them. It put it in perspective that I really have the chance to do something great. It motivates me every day.”
Leon Washington Sr. was an explosive running back and kick returner for the Jets and Seahawks, making two All-Pro teams and two Pro Bowl teams. The Florida State product played four seasons with the Jets (2006-09) and was dangerous whenever he had the ball in his hands. As a Jet, he scored 13 rushing touchdowns, 4 kickoff return touchdowns, and 2 receiving touchdowns.
Washington Jr. has taken after his father in that sense. While not a running back, the younger Washington has racked up plenty of yards on offense and special teams through his explosiveness. He has a very similar playing style to his father, which should translate to the college level.
If he can make an impact at FAU, Washington Jr. has a great shot at pushing to play in the NFL in a few years. At that point, Washington could have the chance to continue his father’s legacy in the NFL, whether on the Jets, Seahawks, or another team.
