The New York Jets’ season opener in San Francisco did not go the way that any fan hoped it would.

Many Jets fans were prepared for the team to lose this game, but not in the fashion that they did. There were ways for the Jets to lose in San Francisco and still come out feeling good. Instead, they fell flat on their faces, squashing the optimistic vibes that surrounded the team.

In the process, the Jets revealed that many of their perceived weaknesses could potentially be more dire than fans expected. Nobody thought this roster was perfect, but the Jets were supposed to be talented enough to overcome their deficiencies. That could absolutely still be the case, but at least for this one night, the Jets’ weaknesses far outweighed their strengths.

Many key storylines emerged in the national media after the loss. As we know, none of those storylines actually matter. All that really matters is the film and the truths that come from it.

The main concern was a brutal defensive performance from a much-hyped Jets defense. Specifically, the Jets were bullied on the ground.

Robert Saleh downplayed the performance when speaking to the media this week. Saleh even said that defensive end Micheal Clemons played “really good” and was “one of the better ones.”

The film doesn’t agree with Saleh there. As we will see, Clemons was not anywhere close to “really good.” Clemons’ performance is just one of many concerns that looked worse on film than Saleh made them out to be.

Saleh can try to bury the reality of the Jets’ defensive performance, but the film never lies. The defense was terrible in this game.

In the first Blewett’s Blitz breakdown of the 2024 regular season, we dig into the core issues of the Jets defense, the tweaks that must be made offensively, and of course, the good and bad of Aaron Rodgers’ first full game as a Jet.

Topics broken down include:

  • A quietly elite performance in coverage from Sauce Gardner
  • The main culprits for the Jets’ horrible run defense
  • How the revamped O-line looked in his debut
  • Why Breece Hall struggled to get going
  • Missed opportunities on offense
  • Lack of pass-rush defensively

And much more!
