Johnson tore his Achilles during the Jets’ Week 2 matchup against the Tennessee Titans, which will keep him sidelined for the remainder of the 2024 season. During Johnson’s sophomore season in 2023, he took a massive leap, recording 7.5 sacks, 7 passes defended, 11 tackles for loss, 55 total tackles, and a pick-six. The Florida State product seemed primed for a breakout campaign this season.

During Thursday night’s game against the divison rival New England Patriots, the Jets’ defense recorded seven sacks, with eight players involved. Several of those players paid homage to Johnson as they imitated his sack celebration. Johnson caught wind of it during the middle of the game, responding on X (formerly Twitter).

While addressing the media following Thursday’s victory, second year pass rusher Will McDonald was asked about honoring Johnson. “Just giving our thanks to Jermaine.” McDonald said. “We just wanted him to know that we still got him with us.”

The Jets, currently 2-1, will need contributions from other players in their pass rush if they hope to make a deep playoff run. With Johnson out for the season and Haason Reddick yet to report to Florham Park, depth will be crucial.
