New York Jets fans had some hope after last Thursday’s win against the Houston Texans. As well-trained Jets fans expected, that hope did not last long.
Keep in mind, the Jets had nine days to prepare for their ensuing game against the Cardinals. Boy, oh boy, it did not look like they prepared at all.
This team has lacked fundamentals all season, and it was never worse than in this game. The defense looked like deers in headlights, missing 20 total tackles in the game. The offense has never been in sync, and that came to a head in Arizona as the Jets stalled in the red zone three times.
The lack of sound football being played is incredibly alarming. Sunday’s loss showed this to its deepest extent. The defense got ran over the entire game and the offense could not convert any drives into touchdowns. The season is over, for all intents and purposes. It is now time for the Jets to figure out who can create a culture that changes the stigma and feel around this team. Talk about an important off-season upcoming.
For now, let’s go over what went wrong yesterday, continuing to show why the Jets must clean house from top to bottom.
Jets-Cardinals Film Review
Naked keeper at the goal line by Kyler Murray. This is probably something you should be aware of in the gameplan, considering the opposing QB. Micheal Clemons neglects to set the edge, has zero awareness, and Kyler walks in. It is hard for me to believe this team is being prepared correctly week to week with the type of reps they put on film. They are out-coached and out-schemed every week. You can’t just hope your players figure it out themselves.
Trap run concept here from AZ. The trap block doesn’t even need to be made because Javon Kinlaw flies upfield and takes himself out of the play. Quincy Williams goes for the hit stick and misses the tackle. Sauce Gardner goes for a ride for an extra 4 yards. It all results in a 14-yard gain. It felt like this type of rep was happening every other play for the defense.
4th and goal out of the half. Must-score situation for the NYJ. Morgan Moses gets beat off the snap. Garrett Wilson does a great job of seeing Aaron Rodgers escape the pocket and getting open; Tyler Conklin is also open. Rodgers just has zero mobility at this point. He gets out of the pocket but is caught almost immediately. It’s tough to win with this. In the red zone, you’re going to need to improvise a lot of the time and extend the play because of how condensed the area is. The issue is you can’t do that successfully when you have a QB that has no movement ability.
At least we know the Cardinals watched film on the Jets; you can’t say the same the other way around. It seems like Isaiah Oliver is responsible for the QB on the read here. Quincy does not engage with his blocker quickly enough (he needs to drive on him immediately).
Does it make any sense to me to have your safety be the read man from that much depth with Kyler’s speed? No, but if Quincy does a better job attacking his blocker here, this play is likely a 2-4 yard gain, not a TD.
Can’t knock Clemons if that’s what he’s being coached to do (crash that hard on the give).
As bad as the players have been, they aren’t being put in remotely decent positions to succeed. There have been too many reps like this the whole season, especially yesterday.
It’s time to clean house.
