New York Jets vs. Indianapolis Colts film review
Third down early in the first quarter. Hi-lo concept that works to perfection as Garrett Wilson comes open on the wrap/drift route. There is zero explanation for how badly Aaron Rodgers misses him here.
Rodgers was never looking backside during his progression, but the Colts blew that coverage, giving Davante Adams a likely walk-in TD on the corner route. It is fine to lock on to a side of the field, but you must execute if open, and Rodgers does not here.

3rd and 8, Colts in 1-man with both linebackers blitzing. Not my favorite concept from the Jets (looks like hitch fades), but Wilson comes open on the stop route at the bottom. There is no way he should be running this short of the sticks, though. Alas, he does, and the Jets punt on 4th and 1 following this. This team has no attention to detail. Coaching matters!
Another one that makes no sense. Rodgers has a clean pocket and a wide-open Wilson on a dig route. The ball should come out at the top of his drop; even if he hitches once, it would be on time. Instead, he stares, pats the ball, and is late getting it out, which allows him to get hit by Olu Fashanu being bull rushed. Horrific timing by Rodgers.
Nothing crazy here, but it’s good to see Fashanu having a good pad level and displacement on the DE here to spring Breece Hall for 7 yards on the toss play. He drives his feet through the play and gives Breece a big hole behind him, allowing Breece to not be touched for the first 5-6 yards of the run.
Great job by Alijah Vera-Tucker to get his hand to #90 to help Joe Tippmann with the reach block. Good crack from Xavier Gipson. Morgan Moses and AVT do a great job climbing to the second level, and this play is made to order for Breece’s speed. He runs through a massive hole and then shows great contact balance to get the TD after being pushed at the 5-yard line.
Big-time pass set from Fashanu here on a third-and-14 for the Jets. He gets a chip from Tyler Conklin but shows really good hand placement and anchor on the DE, who seems to be trying a bull rush but then gives up when Rodgers bails the pocket. Good job by Fashanu to stay engaged for the whole play as well, as it gives Rodgers time to get out of the pocket and hit Gipson on the sideline for a big conversion. Wilson on the post-corner is tempting to me here with that much space, but Rodgers opts for Gipson.
Cover 2/Palms hole shot from Anthony Richardson on last drive. I would have loved for Sauce Gardner to be in press here to to re-route Alec Pierce; instead, he has a free release. Sauce is reading 2-to-1, if the #2 goes out, he has him. Richardson pumps the out and rips the hole shot. Great throw. In my eyes, the lack of pressing the outside WR allows this to work. If Sauce jammed him you’d feel like the timing would be off, and it would allow Jalen Mills to gain depth in time. Who knows how it’s being coached, though.
The Jets were out-schemed and out-coached on the game-winning play. Indianapolis has the Jets in nickel, as the Colts are in 11 personnel. Tear motion from Jonathan Taylor, which confuses Quincy Williams and Chuck Clark for a second, and makes it hard for Clark to help in the run fit. The Colts run pin and pull and have 7 blockers for 7 defenders. Micheal Clemons is pinned with ease, the Colts have a hat for a hat on the perimeter against the Jets’ DBs, and it’s an easy TD. Nail in the coffin.
