Should he stay, or should he go?
With the New York Jets’ 2024 season all but over, speculation surrounding 41-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ future with the organization is all the rage.
Appearing on ESPN’s New York’s “DiPietro & Rothenberg” with host Jake Asman, ESPN’s Rich Cimini revealed he thinks there is just a “10% or 20%” chance Rodgers returns to the Jets next season.
“I don’t think Rodgers will be back,” Cimini said Friday morning. “I just really think Woody Johnson does not want him back, and if Woody Johnson is smart, he will defer that decision to his two new hires. If the owner is not on board, it is going to be tough to bring him back, and I think there is a host of salary cap reasons also not to bring him back, so if I had to bet right now, I would say he is not back, I wouldn’t say it is out of the question, I would probably say there is a 10% or 20% chance.”
If the Jets bring Rodgers back next season, his 2025 cap number is set at $23.5 million. However, they would owe him $63 million in dead money in 2026.
On the other hand, if the organization cuts the Cal product, they will owe him $49 million. This can be spread out between $14 million in 2025 and $35 million in 2026 if the Jets cut Rodgers with a post-June 1 designation.
As the organization prepares for an offseason full of crucial decisions along with a complete cultural transformation, Rodgers’ future with the team seems to be leaning in one direction, although nothing is certain just yet.
