Well, it was fun while it lasted.
The possibility of a reunion between the New York Jets and former head coach Rex Ryan seems to be over.
In an interview with WFAN on Sunday, SNY’s Connor Hughes dismissed rumors that Ryan is a serious candidate for the Jets’ head coaching position following his interview last Tuesday.
“Rex Ryan, I heard, is completely out; that is not gonna happen with the Jets,” Hughes said.
This comes after Ryan expressed his confidence in landing the job last Monday while appearing on ESPN New York’s “DiPietro & Rothenberg.”
“100 percent, absolutely I do [think I will land the job]. And the reason I think I’m going to get it is because I’m the best guy, and it ain’t close,” Ryan said last Monday.
Ryan, 62, spent six seasons as the Jets’ head coach (2009-14), logging a 46-50 record while leading the team to consecutive AFC championship games in 2009 and 2010.
However, while it is easy to highlight the great moments over Ryan’s tenure, it is essential to recognize the lows.
New York missed the playoffs in each of Ryan’s final four seasons with the team. Following his dismissal after a 4-12 season in 2014, Ryan spent two seasons as the head coach of the Buffalo Bills, failing to make the playoffs.
Since the Jets moved on from Ryan, who has not coached in any capacity since 2016, the Jets have yet to return to the playoffs.
Currently an ESPN analyst, Ryan spent months campaigning for a second chance with the Jets. However, it looks like his wish will not be granted.
The Jets will continue combing through the remainder of their head coaching candidates, a list that no longer includes Mike Vrabel, who was hired by the New England Patriots on Sunday.
