At long last, the coaching search for the New York Jets is moving past the first stage.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Detroit Lions’ Aaron Glenn is set to have an in-person interview with his former team this week.
“#Lions DC Aaron Glenn, one of the top coaching candidates, is set for an in-person, second interview with the #Jets, per me and @MikeGarafolo. Glenn will have options and electing to do his first visit to the team that drafted him, where he was an All-Pro, is significant.”
Glenn is also reportedly scheduled for an in-person interview with New Orleans, where he coached for multiple seasons before leaving for Detroit.
This is a big step for the Jets, and one that could have some pretty big ramifications. It also raises some questions.
With no general manager in place, are the Jets comfortable hiring Glenn first? Do they want Glenn’s input on what candidate to bring in at GM, or will Glenn be in charge of picking his guy? Furthermore, are the Jets ready to pull the trigger on offering Glenn the job?
Regardless of the answer, the second stage of interviews has begun for the Jets. It will be interesting to see how the remainder of the process shapes up, specifically regarding the types of candidates the team hones in on at HC and GM.
But most importantly, it will be fascinating to see what candidates this long process aided by the 33rd Team will produce for the team’s regime.
