Josh Myers has been the primary starting center for the Green Bay Packers over the last three seasons. He has missed just one start during that span while becoming a dependable one of the better pass blockers at his position.
He may no longer have a starting role anymore on the New York Jets, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t ecstatic to join the reunion in Florham Park.
Playing with so many of his old college teammates will certainly do that for a player.
Myers speaks out on Jets ‘reunion’
Myers’ one-year deal worth $3.5 million allowed the former Ohio State product to join his former college teammates in quarterback Justin Fields, wide receiver Garrett Wilson, and tight end Jeremy Ruckert.
Pair that college reunion with the fact that the team will be hoping Myers comes off the bench behind third-year center Joe Tippmann, and the 26-year-old could only describe the Jets as the “perfect fit” at signing.
“I spoke with my agent a lot about where we wanted to end up landing,” Myers said on the team’s official website. “The more we talked about it and the more we thought about it, the more the Jets just seemed like the perfect fit. For one, just everything I’ve got with Justin [Fields], just the camaraderie we have. Also, we like the direction the team’s going in and we’re really excited for it.”
Fields and Myers were Buckeyes for two seasons from 2019-2020. Along the way, the two won multiple Big Ten East titles, were First-Team All-Big Ten and were team captains together in their final season.
Myers In A New Market
As great as an experience as playing for the Jets and with his college teammates again, Myers is aware that he’s walking into a different beast.
For starters, while playing on a consistent playoff team in Green Bay is one thing, the market size of the town in Wisconsin isn’t even closer to what New York can bring. An adjustment is surely coming for the veteran.
“For one, it’ll be an entirely new experience,” Myers said. “Coming from Green Bay, the smallest market, to really the biggest. It’s going to be a cool experience. Also, like you said, getting to play with former teammates and getting another year in the league is just awesome.”
Myers won’t have the pressure of being immediately placed into the starting lineup, but is the kind of veteran other organizations wish they could have along their offensive line.
It’s why the Jets would most assuredly feel as well as Myers does about his “perfect fit” with the team.
