The New York Jets will soon need to start paying a premium to retain their young talent.

One of the players due for a lucrative contract extension is standout wide receiver Garrett Wilson.

According to SNY’s Connor Hughes, three sources around the league estimated that Wilson “ultimately lands a deal within $25 to $30 million annually.”

Wilson, 24, is set to enter his fourth NFL season, the last year of his rookie contract. He also has a fifth-year option for the 2026 season that the Jets have until May 1 to pick up.

The 24-year-old has topped 1,000 receiving yards in each of his three NFL seasons, becoming the first wide receiver in franchise history to do so. He has achieved that while catching passes from eight different quarterbacks.

Since 2022, Wilson ranks 10th among wide receivers in receiving yards (3,249) and seventh in receptions (270).

Wilson is set to reunite with his former college quarterback after the Jets signed Justin Fields to a two-year deal worth up to $40 million, including $30 million guaranteed.

Extending Wilson should be a top priority for the Jets, as cornerstone wide receivers are not players you can pass up on extending. The former Buckeye has proven to be quarterback-proof and one of the NFL’s top receivers.

However, speaking to reporters at the NFL owners meetings in Palm Beach, Florida, first-year general manager Darren Mougey said extensions for Wilson and others will be discussed after the draft.

Whenever negotiations begin, the Jets would be wise to extend Wilson.
