The New York Jets have a new starting quarterback for the 2025 season.
Despite his standing on the depth chart “being written in pencil,” according to head coach Aaron Glenn, Justin Fields is ready to prove that he belongs not just in the NFL but as the face of an organization like New York.
Fields signed a two-year, $40 million deal with the Jets this offseason with the expectation he would be the team’s starting quarterback in 2025. If Fields wants to make it more of a long-term plan, he’ll have to adjust to his new role rather quickly.
Justin Fields Addresses New Role With Jets
Speaking to reporters for the first time since becoming the starting quarterback of the Jets, Fields knows he’s running out of time to show he can be a quality starting quarterback in the NFL.
“Definitely something I want to prove to myself,” Fields said. “My expectations for myself are higher than anybody else’s. Something to prove to myself. I think I’ve been improving each year I’ve been in the league and I look to do the same this year.”
Fields is a former first-round pick from the Chicago Bears but has bounced around for the last three seasons. He has struggled to stay healthy and throw the ball consistently, especially late in games.
The Ohio State product has completed just 56.1% of his passes in the fourth quarter throughout his career – worst in the NFL among quarterbacks with at least 200 fourth-quarter pass attempts over that span.
If you ask new Jets quarterback Aaron Glenn, though, a big part of Fields’ struggles have been based on the offenses he played in. It’s something the coach has said he wants to change this offseason.
“We’re going to let him play quarterback,” Glenn said during league meetings. “That’s what he’s always wanted to do. I’m not saying he hasn’t had a chance to play that, do that in other places. That’s not my issue. I know what I want to do with that player. Obviously want to utilize his legs but want to give him a chance to go out there and play quarterback.”
Fields won’t talk much about what didn’t work with these other teams, but it is clear that he is excited to get a fresh start of sorts in New York.
All he has to do is go out and produce victories moving forward.
