Should the New York Jets select a quarterback in the 2025 NFL draft?
That is one of the most polarizing questions among the Jets fanbase less than three weeks away from draft night.
According to Justin Fields, who general manager Darren Mougey named New York’s starting quarterback at the owners meetings, it doesn’t matter if Gang Green rolls the dice on a quarterback in any round of the draft.
“I don’t really like to answer rhetorical questions,” Fields responded on Wednesday when asked about the possibility of the Jets selecting a quarterback. “I’m willing to teach, but I’m not really interested in rhetorical questions.”
At 26 years old, Fields is on his third NFL team since being selected 11th overall in the 2021 draft, determined to solidify himself as a top quarterback in the league. Through 50 career games (44 starts), he has posted a 14-30 record, throwing 45 touchdowns and 31 interceptions while ripping 2,509 career rushing yards and 19 touchdowns on 418 attempts.
Spending the 2024 season in Pittsburgh with the Steelers, Fields started the first six games of the season for the Steelers before getting benched. Across his six starts, the former Ohio State Buckeye completed 65.8% of his pass attempts for 1,106 yards, with five passing touchdowns and one interception. The Ohio State product also picked up 289 yards and five touchdowns on 62 attempts.
While Fields has the potential to be a solid NFL quarterback, he has yet to solidify himself as a reliable starter. That said, if the Jets fall in love with a quarterback in this year’s draft class, Fields’ presence on the roster should not dissuade them from making the pick.
